  • Family history & overview:
This is an 'orphan' Parrott family, in the sense that the founder was abandoned by his family in Overton Co., Tenneessee. His great granddaughter, Dorris Parrett Wilford, relates the history: "James Forrester was traveling by wagon train with his mother/siblings in 1832 in Overton Co (TN). He contracted measles so she 'left' him with a Miller family, so the story goes, where he stayed until he was 11/12 years old, at which time he has 'bought' by Geo. M. Thompson for $1.00 and lived with him until he became of age. His mother never returned for him... He did not know where he was born or who his parents were."

James ended up adopting the surname, Parrott, which might be a sign that the Parrott family living there took him in, or at least, were nice to him. Alternatively, the connection may predate his arrival in Tennessee. Based on DNA values, James Forrester appears to be descended from one of the Doss families (Haplogroup R1b - Lineage II) of Virginia. A Parrott-Doss connection can be found in there: The Last Will & Testament of James Doss, Sr. ("Abstracts of Pittsylvania Co., VA Wills 1767-1820" Page 420-421. Will Written: 21 May 1796; Probated: 18 Jul 1796) was witnessed by Benjamin Cannifax and John Parrott. John was the son of Curtis Parrott Jr.; James Doss appears under Tyre Parrott, grandson of Curtis Jr., in the Pittsylvania land tax records between 1786 and 1793. In turn, Benjamin Cannifax also witnessed the will of Curtis Parrott Jr. (Book 9, p 494. 10 August 1793). The inference is that the Parrotts and the Dosses were neighbors in Pittsylvania. Thus, the most probable explanation is that James Forrester Parrott was actually a grandson of James Doss. Today, living family members use both Parrott and Parrett as surnames.

James served as a Sergeant of the 28th Consolidated Infantry during the Civil War, and wrote several letters to his wife, Mahala Bowman Parrott, that recount life on the front. Other family members have proven to be writers and as well, namely Lora Lee Montgomery Parrott (1923-2011) and her sons Richard, Roger, and psychologist & relationship expert, Les Parrott, and his wife, Leslie.

  • 1. James Forrester Parrott was born on 3 Feb 1830 in Virginia and died on 6 May 1868 in Rock Springs, Overton Co., Tennessee at age 38.

Family information in Parrott Talk VIII(1):16, May 1980
Biography from Parrott Talk VIII(4):3, Feb 1981

See copies of his letters in Parrott Talk VIII(4) Feb 1891. Familyis listed on p 12. The following is from Parrott Talk 9:145, 1991:

"Some time during the 1830's a little boy named James Parrott was travelling with the westward movement in a covered wagon with his mother and seven brothers and sisters as they passed through the Cumberland Mountain area of east Tennessee. His father had died the previous year.

"The mother and eight children spent the night on the Thompson farm. Before leaving the following day, it was discovered that the Iittle boy, James, had broken out with measles. Since she could not take him in the wagon train, she left James with Farmer Thompson promising to come back and get him later. She apparently died along the way and the little boy was left to be raised by the Thompson family.

James Parrott was a 1st Sergeant in the Civil War for the South, enlisting at McMinnville, Tennessee on November 27, 1862, for a three year term. He was wounded at the Battle of Franklin, while fighting with the 28th Tennessee Regiment, Company H. He was captured by the Northern Soldiers on November 30, 1864, and was taken to the #1 USA General Hospital in Nashville for treatment where Union doctors amputated his leg on December 28, 1864. He was then transferred to the Union Prison in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 6, 1865, and was discharged after taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 16, 1865. He died at age 38, in 1868."

    From: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnoverto/docs/CivilWarLettersParrott.html

"After the war, Mr. Parrott was murdered on his own property in 1868. He was buried at the Officer Cemetery in Overton County."

    ===========

DNA testing makes it almost certain that James was a Doss by birth. How he came to acquire the Parrott surname is a matter of some speculation, but the inference has been that it has to do with the Parrott family living in Overton county at the time.

There is an alternative explanation, for which the following wills are of interest. The names that stand out are Benjamin Cannifax and John Parrott:

Last Will & Testament of James Doss, Sr.

General Notes: Unsourced obituary in Find a Grave

SAN ANGELO - Marceline (Marcia) S. Parrett left her temporary home here on earth for her eternal home in Heaven on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008. She has been eagerly awaiting going "home". Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at First Baptist Church in San Angelo with Associate Pastor Ronnie Laughlin officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Parrett was born to Agnes and Ernest Snellings in Shawnee, Okla., on Dec. 26, 1911. She would have celebrated her 97th birthday this month. She spent her childhood in Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1929. After graduation, Marcia went to work for J.C. Penney. It was during this time that she met and married her husband of 66 years, THOMAS ROLAND PARRETT , who was a sales rep for Procter & Gamble and was based in Shawnee. They were married on Feb. 17, 1938. They lived in McAlester, Okla., with their two children until January 1944 when Mr. Parrett was inducted into the armed forces. Mrs. Parrett then returned to Shawnee until Mr. Parrett was honorably discharged from the military on Christmas Eve 1945 and in February 1946 rejoined Procter & Gamble as a sales rep based in San Angelo. Mrs. Parrett quickly became involved in the San Angelo community as a scout leader, an election judge, a member of AARP, a Vacation Bible School teacher, and was an active member of the Women's Forum. They were season ticket holders for Bobcat games, the Symphony, and the Community Theater. She loved her J.O.Y. Sunday School class and was a committed member of First Baptist Church for 62 years. She had a knack for helping people find just the right outfit or gift. She was employed there for about 20 years. When Mr. Parrett was elected Mayor of San Angelo in 1977, Mrs. Parrett graciously served as First Lady of San Angelo until 1985. She assisted Tom at numerous city functions. Family was always first before self for Marcia. She held the family together and loved us tirelessly and unconditionally. Marcia was available to her family at any time and supported her husband, children, and grandchildren in every endeavor. Her great-grandchildren were a joy to her. She was a giver and a doer - not only for family but for her many friends as well. One of her greatest regrets in these last few months was that she thought she couldn't do anything for any one. Arnold married someone.

    40. Rev. Dr. Alonzo Leslie Parrott Jr. (Alonzo Leslie Sr. (Rev.)3, Thomas Carroll2, James Forrester1) was born on 22 Apr 1922 in Clarkesville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee and died on 23 Sep 2007 in Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona at age 85.

General Notes: The Rev. Dr. A. Leslie Parrott loved learning and he inspired that love in others. It was a family legacy of sorts.

His grandfather had been president of a Christian college. The Rev. Dr. Parrott himself became president of two Christian colleges. And his three children are all involved in education.

"His legacy for Christian higher education is all over my life," said his son, Les Parrott III, professor of psychology at Seattle Pacific University.

The Rev. Dr. Parrott, who also led Church of the Nazarene congregations in Puyallup, Kirkland and Kelso, died Sept. 23 in Phoenix after a brief illness. He was 85.

His father, who had grown up poor in Tennessee, had only $5 to his name when he came to Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. Years later, he went back \emdash as president of the university.

The Rev. Dr. Parrott followed in his father's footsteps, serving as president of Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass., from 1970 to 1975, and as president of Olivet Nazarene University from 1975 to 1991.

"You almost pick up leadership in education by osmosis when you grow up in a college president's home," said son Les Parrott III. His older brother, Roger Parrott, is president of Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss.; and oldest brother, Richard Parrott, is an educator and lecturer in Nashville, Tenn.

The Rev. Dr. Parrott's wife, Lora Lee Parrott, has a master's degree in theology.

Whether in his role as college administrator or parish leader, the Rev. Dr. Parrott inspired.

"He was a highly educated man who was then able to communicate with all of us about all he had learned," said Kathy Perry, community-care pastor at Puyallup Church of the Nazarene, where the Rev. Dr. Parrott came out of semi-retirement to serve as senior pastor from 1995 to 2000. "He was very interested in all of us participating in that process of growing as a person."

Perry was a student at Olivet while the Rev. Dr. Parrott was president there.

At the Puyallup church, as at Olivet years earlier, he beautified the place, spearheading the renovation of the church's sanctuary and foyer.

That he wanted to receive people in a place that brought peace and comfort depicts who he was, Perry said.

The Rev. Dr. Parrott, author of numerous books including "Building Today's Church," always promoted reading, Perry said.

The last time she saw him, he asked what book she had read most recently, what she had discovered from reading it, and on what points she disagreed with the author.

It showed his gift for conversation and for taking personal interest in people, Perry said. The Rev. Dr. Parrott never allowed people to rest on past achievements. Instead, he encouraged them to "continue the learning process for a lifetime."

In addition to his wife and sons, the Rev. Dr. Parrott is survived by his sister, Lorene Perry, of Kankakee, Ill.; his brother, John Parrott, of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services were held in Bourbonnais and Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Leslie and Lora Lee Parrott Endowed Scholarship at Olivet Nazarene University, One University Ave., Bourbonnais, Ill., 60914-2345.
